Amid rising global tensions and a renewed arms race, Pakistan has achieved a major diplomatic success at the United Nations. The First Committee of the General Assembly has adopted three resolutions presented by Pakistan with overwhelming majorities.

The adoption of these resolutions highlights the importance of Pakistan’s position on global peace, regional stability, arms control and the risks associated with the potential use of nuclear weapons.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, the First Committee of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, during its session on disarmament and international security, approved all three resolutions presented by Pakistan.

This development comes at a time when political and military tensions are rising in different parts of the world. The acceleration of the arms race and the growing lack of trust at the global level have also posed new challenges to the existing international peace and security system.

Three Resolutions, Three Key Objectives

The resolutions presented by Pakistan primarily cover three important areas. These include the security of non-nuclear-weapon states, conventional arms control and confidence-building measures at the regional level.

The first resolution aims to provide effective international assurances to states that do not possess nuclear weapons. It calls for the establishment of international arrangements to protect them against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.

The resolution received the support of 122 votes, while no country voted against it. This support is being viewed as an important development for the concept of protecting non-nuclear-weapon states against nuclear threats.

The second resolution concerns conventional arms control at the regional and sub-regional levels. It was adopted by an overwhelming majority of 180 votes.

The primary objective of this resolution is to promote cooperation to prevent the proliferation of conventional weapons, ensure their effective control and reduce risks arising from military activities in different regions.

The third resolution concerned confidence-building measures in regional and sub-regional contexts. It was adopted without a vote.

This initiative highlights the importance of joint efforts to reduce misunderstandings and tensions among different countries, strengthen communication and resolve disputes peacefully.

Pakistan’s Longstanding Diplomatic Efforts

Pakistan has been highlighting issues related to disarmament, regional peace and confidence-building at the United Nations platform for several decades.

Pakistan has maintained that global security cannot be ensured merely by increasing the number of weapons. It requires trust among states, effective agreements and shared responsibilities.

In particular, providing protection to non-nuclear-weapon states against nuclear attacks or threats has remained among Pakistan’s diplomatic priorities.

Similarly, Pakistan considers conventional arms control and confidence-building measures at the regional level effective means of reducing tensions across different regions.

An Important Message for Global Peace

The adoption of the resolutions presented by Pakistan comes at a time when the global arms control system is under pressure.

Growing differences among major powers, regional conflicts and the expansion of military capabilities have created a complex situation for international peace.

In such an environment, the broad support received by Pakistan’s resolutions at the United Nations forum highlights that the international community cannot ignore issues such as arms control and confidence-building.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office spokesperson, these resolutions provide practical and cooperative pathways for reducing risks, promoting mutual trust and ensuring international and regional peace and stability.

The adoption of all three resolutions marks an important development in Pakistan’s continued diplomatic efforts. It further strengthens Pakistan’s role in global discussions on disarmament, peace and security.
