In a major reshuffle of the federal capital’s police and cybercrime investigation setup, Capt (Rtd) Sohail Chaudhry has been appointed as the new Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police.
According to an official notification, incumbent IG Ali Nasir Rizvi has been transferred from his post and appointed Director General (DG) of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
The notification confirms the changes in the senior leadership of both institutions, marking a significant shift in the command structure of Islamabad Police and the country’s cybercrime investigation framework.
Sohail Chaudhry will now assume responsibility for leading Islamabad Police, while Rizvi will take charge of the NCCIA, which is responsible for investigating cybercrime-related cases. The latest appointments are part of a broader administrative reshuffle involving key positions within the capital’s law-enforcement and cybercrime investigation authorities.
The Establishment Division has issued a notification confirming the appointments of both officers. Sohail Chaudhry is a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP). He has previously served in several key positions in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Multan, as well as holding important responsibilities within the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).
His previous assignments include Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad, DIG Operations Lahore, DIG CTD Punjab, and Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan.
Sohail Chaudhry assumed the position of DIG Operations Lahore following the 2021 Minar-e-Pakistan harassment incident, which brought him into the national spotlight. He later served as DIG CTD Punjab before being transferred out of the province and posted as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Meanwhile, Ali Nasir Rizvi, who was serving as Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police, will now assume charge as Director General (DG) of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
Sohail Chaudhry’s appointment as head of Islamabad Police comes at a time when the capital’s police force is undergoing efforts to introduce modern policing systems. These initiatives include an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled command and control system aimed at improving real-time surveillance, coordination, and response capabilities.
