A resolution has been submitted in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly condemning the alleged derogatory and negative portrayal of Pashtuns in the drama serial Aap Ki Izzat.
The resolution states that the drama portrays a vegetable vendor as a Pashtun character and depicts him as greedy and immoral, alleging that he attempts to lure, rob and harm a married woman.
According to the resolution, such a portrayal is contrary to what it describes as Pashtun values of honour, hospitality, family traditions and respect for women.
It further states that portraying the character in this manner could reinforce negative and stereotypical perceptions about Pashtuns.
The resolution also expresses concern that Pashtuns are frequently portrayed in the national media in roles such as security guards, drivers, labourers and vegetable vendors, with some of these characters being associated with negative or criminal traits.
It argues that such portrayals can hurt the sentiments of millions of Pashtun citizens and may have an adverse impact on national unity and inter-provincial harmony.
The resolution calls on the federal government, particularly the provincial government, to approach the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and take immediate notice of the alleged controversial content in the drama.
It also calls for an impartial review of the content and recommends legal action if a violation of the relevant media code of conduct is established.
The resolution further urges media houses to avoid portraying any nationality, language, province or cultural identity through negative stereotypes and to ensure responsible and balanced representation that promotes national unity.
It reiterates that derogatory portrayals targeting Pashtun culture, identity and dignity should not be tolerated.
