The administrations of Islamabad and Rawalpindi have stepped up security preparations following announcements of a long march and sit-ins aimed at the seat of power. Authorities in both cities have devised separate security plans, with preparations underway to block key routes using containers and barriers.
Police reinforcements from other provinces have also begun arriving in the twin cities as officials intensify security measures ahead of the planned demonstrations. A large number of containers have been moved to major thoroughfares in Islamabad, including 26 Number Chungi, Faizabad, Kashmir Highway and Murree Road.
Three routes leading to the Red Zone have been sealed, while barriers will be placed on other routes depending on the evolving situation. Under Rawalpindi’s security plan, more than 11,000 police personnel will be deployed.
Authorities have decided to close 26 entry points into Rawalpindi and install barriers at 72 locations. Eight routes leading to Adiala Jail will also be closed, while preparations are underway to block 50 major roads within the city. Security arrangements around the jail are being further tightened, with additional police personnel likely to be deployed near sensitive installations and key locations.
Authorities have also finalised plans to close 50 main streets in Rawalpindi’s city centre. Movement through these areas will be restricted by placing barriers at key points. The measures are likely to cause travel difficulties and traffic congestion for residents of the twin cities, particularly on major roads where routes are being closed or restricted ahead of the planned protests.
