The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has arrested a 17-year-old student in Bahawalpur on Wednesday for allegedly trying to poison his father.
The teenager reportedly used artificial intelligence (AI) to seek advice on how to give poison to his father. The investigation also found that he had set up a small laboratory at home.
How did the student use AI to prepare the poison?
According to the investigation, the student was inspired by the crime drama Breaking Bad.
He allegedly collected chemical materials from Australia and Islamabad to prepare poison at home.
The teenager reportedly made an initial attempt to poison his father. When it failed, he turned to an AI tool for further guidance.
Authorities have not shared details about the chemicals or the alleged poisoning method.
NCCIA receives information from abroad
The action was taken under the direction of NCCIA Punjab Director Hussam bin Iqbal. The agency reportedly received information from abroad about the case.
Following the information, investigators looked into the teenager’s activities and arrested him in Bahawalpur.
The case has raised concerns about the use of artificial intelligence by children and teenagers.
It has also drawn attention to the need for stronger safety measures to stop AI tools from being used for harmful purposes.
The investigation highlights the risks linked to online activities by minors and the challenges authorities face in dealing with the misuse of digital platforms.
FIR registered against OpenAI
In a separate incident, the Canadian province of British Columbia has filed a lawsuit against the AI company OpenAI regarding a school shooting incident.
According to an international news agency report, the lawsuit alleges that the attacker’s concerning activity was present on a ChatGPT account. Yet the AI company failed to notify the police about it.
Reports indicate that OpenAI expressed regret over the incident. According to them, at the time, it had found no clear evidence of an imminent attack.
