The University of Amsterdam has announced five fully funded PhD opportunities for Pakistani students and researchers for 2026, offering candidates the chance to pursue doctoral research in a range of academic fields.
According to the university, selected candidates can receive a monthly salary of up to €4,051, along with holiday and year-end allowances as part of the funding package. The PhD opportunities cover several disciplines, including ecology, environmental sciences, linguistics, multilingualism, communication science and social sciences.
The fully funded positions are aimed at candidates interested in pursuing advanced research and academic careers in the Netherlands. Eligible Pakistani students and researchers can review the specific requirements, application deadlines and research areas for each PhD position before submitting their applications.
The first PhD project will investigate how pesticides and fertilisers affect microbial and viral communities in aquatic sediments. Researchers will study agricultural drainage ditches to determine how agrochemical pollution influences carbon cycling and sediment ecosystems.
The project will also examine sediment carbon pools and greenhouse gas emissions. The successful PhD candidate will use a combination of fieldwork, laboratory experiments, environmental chemistry, microbial ecology and data analysis.
The research will be conducted at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED), with applications closing on October 18, 2026. The second ecology PhD project will explore the relationship between vegetation, soil microbes and carbon cycling.
Researchers will investigate how vegetation traits and structure influence soil conditions and microbial processes under environmental stresses such as drought and heat. The project aims to improve understanding of how vegetation and soil microbial communities interact and contribute to carbon cycling under increasingly challenging environmental conditions.
