The senior-most leader of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), Chaudhary Muhammad Ashraf, died at the age of 90.
Chaudhary Muhammad Ashraf was a longstanding figure in national politics and was known as an associate of former prime minister and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif.
He was elected to the National Assembly four times on a PML-N ticket. During his political career, he also served as Parliamentary Secretary for Education and held senior positions related to Pakistan’s legal and parliamentary affairs.
Muhammad Ashraf served as chairman of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Law and Justice and as vice chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council. He had also been a member of the Pakistan Bar Council.
His death was announced by family members, who said he had been active in politics for many years.
His funeral prayers are scheduled to be held at 10:00am on Saturday, 26 September, at Shuhada Mosque in Farid Town.
Tributes from political and legal circles are expected to follow as colleagues and associates remember his decades-long public career.
PML-N leader shot dead
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former chairman of the Muridke Municipal Committee, Sheikh Shabbir Ahmed, was shot dead by unidentified armed men near Kala Shah Kaku on Friday night.
According to details, the assailants intercepted Sheikh Shabbir’s vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and died at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said the victim’s car was riddled with bullets during the attack. The attackers fled the scene while brandishing weapons.
Police reached the site after receiving information about the incident and collected evidence from the crime scene. A search operation was also launched to trace the suspects.
Police registered a first information report (FIR) against eight unidentified suspects in connection with the killing.
The FIR was registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Sheikh Kabir.
The District Police Officer (DPO) said investigators had collected important evidence from the crime scene. Four special investigation teams have also been formed under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (SP) Nawaz Siyal to arrest those involved.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been established.
