The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled the case regarding local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for September 29, 2026.
The commission has issued notices to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary and Local Government Secretary. Both officials have been directed to appear before the ECP in person at the hearing.
The case is linked to delays in holding local government elections in the province. It also concerns the legislation needed to move the election process forward.
Earlier, the ECP gave the KP government another three weeks to complete the required legislation for the local government elections.
ECP seeks progress on local government law
A four-member ECP bench expressed concern over delays in the election process. Sindh Member Nisar Durrani headed the bench, during an earlier hearing.
The commission made it clear that local government elections must be held. It also warned the provincial government against further delays.
Officials told the ECP that the delimitation process had been affected in seven districts. The provincial government wants local government elections to take place across KP at the same time.
The September 29 hearing will review the progress made by the provincial government. It will also examine changes to the local government law and other related matters.
Another election case set for same day
The ECP has also scheduled a separate case about the intra-party elections of Kissan Ittehad Party for September 29.
The ECP has previously said that the election process should move forward without unnecessary delays. It also warned that several constitutional options were available if progress was not made.
ECP deadline for political parties to submit financial statements
Earlier, the Election Commission directed all political parties to submit their audited financial statements for the financial year 2025–26 by August 29. Parties were also required to provide complete details about their funding.
The submissions must include audited accounts and details of income and expenses. Political parties must also provide information about their funding sources, assets and liabilities.
In addition, the party head must submit a declaration confirming that the party did not receive funds from prohibited sources.
