Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar, a senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and husband of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has shared details about his married life in a recent interview with journalist Azaz Syed on his digital programme Talk SHOCK.
Safdar and Maryam Nawaz have been married for 35 years. Maryam Nawaz and Junaid Safdar have three children and several grandchildren.
Maryam Nawaz’s family hides desserts
Safdar said their arguments at home are usually small and normal. He said they are not usually linked to politics.
He gave his diet as an example. Safdar said his family sometimes hides desserts from him because they are concerned about his blood sugar levels.
He joked that his family tells him that eating sweets could affect his HbA1c level. Safdar said he still asks them to let him have some dessert.
When asked if his public statements cause problems at home, Safdar said he has his own views and has the right to express them.
He said he speaks against people he considers corrupt and does not see anything wrong with sharing his views publicly.
Who takes initiative first?
He said Maryam Nawaz usually takes the initiative. Safdar said their 35-year marriage is based on respect and understanding. He said political power does not play a role in their relationship.
“There is no question of commanding authority. It is a relationship of respect and honour,” he said.
Why does Safdar not join the Punjab cabinet?
Safdar also explained why he does not have a position in the Punjab cabinet.
He said this was a deliberate decision. According to Safdar, it would be awkward for him to sit in the cabinet while his wife is the chief minister.
He said cabinet members are expected to stand when the chief minister enters the room. He questioned why he should be there if he would have to follow the same protocol.
