The University of Southampton in the United Kingdom (UK) has announced scholarship for a PhD research project exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can predict nanoscale defects in semiconductor chip manufacturing.
The deadline to apply is 1 June 2027, and students from Pakistan are eligible to apply, although full funding for international tuition fees is not guaranteed.
The project, titled Deep Learning Modelling of Nano Defects in Chip Fabrication, combines artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, experimental research and high-performance computing.
Researchers will investigate how deep-learning models can identify patterns associated with tiny defects during chip production, potentially helping manufacturers improve production quality, reduce costs and increase manufacturing efficiency.
Who can apply?
Applicants must have at least a UK 2:1 honours degree or an equivalent international qualification.
Relevant academic backgrounds include:
· Electronic and electrical engineering
· Physics
· Materials science
· Computer science
· Related scientific and engineering disciplines
The project combines practical laboratory work with computational research, making it relevant to candidates interested in both semiconductor technology and AI.
Funding for Pakistani students
The university states that eligible UK and EU students can receive tuition fee coverage and a tax-free living stipend.
International applicants, including Pakistanis, may also apply. However, additional faculty funding may be needed to cover the difference between domestic and international tuition fees.
Pakistani applicants should therefore confirm whether their offer includes full international tuition fee support and a living stipend before accepting a place.
Documents required
Applicants should prepare the supporting documents required by the university, which may include:
· A curriculum vitae (CV)
· Academic certificates and transcripts
· Two academic references
· A research proposal, where required
· Evidence of English-language proficiency, if applicable
Applicants should check the project’s official requirements to confirm which documents are mandatory.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through the University of Southampton’s postgraduate research admissions system. Candidates should identify the relevant PhD project and follow the application instructions for the appropriate engineering and electronics research programme.
The closing date is 1 June 2027.
Pakistani students interested in the opportunity are advised to review the eligibility criteria and funding conditions carefully before applying.
