Bahrain has introduced new rules allowing foreign workers to work temporarily for another employer for up to 90 days.

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) announced the change to give businesses more flexibility when hiring workers.

Eligible foreign employees can take short-term assignments without transferring their existing work permits.

Foreign workers must meet several conditions before joining another employer temporarily.

  • Hold a valid work permit throughout the assignment
  • Current employer and the company offering temporary work must both approve the arrangement
  • Worker must also provide written consent
  • Employers must submit the application through the LMRA’s Expat Management System
  • The authority must approve and officially record the assignment before it begins

Moreover, LMRA chief executive Nibras Talib said the reform would help businesses manage staffing needs while protecting workers.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining employment opportunities for Bahraini citizens.

Bahrain Chamber chairman Nabeel Kanoo welcomed the decision, and said the change would help companies respond to short-term business needs and make better use of workers already living in Bahrain.

The reform could also reduce the need for lengthy overseas recruitment procedures.

The new system offers an opportunity to gain temporary work experience with another employer for expatriates.

However, the rules do not allow workers to change employers freely.

Every temporary assignment requires consent from the worker, agreement from both employers and LMRA approval. Additionally, it cannot continue beyond the permitted period without further legal authorisation.

Previously, Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani met Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), HJ, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (COAS & CDF), at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest. The two sides also discussed the regional security situation and defence and security cooperation between Pakistan and Bahrain.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Asim Munir said that Pakistan and Bahrain have long-standing brotherly relations. He said these relations are based on shared values and mutual respect.
