ISLAMABAD: The sentencing of former DG ISI Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed on multiple charges has been widely welcomed at political and government levels.
The army’s strong system of internal accountability has once again shown that the institution does not hesitate to hold its own members answerable.
Atta Tarar
Information Minister Atta Tarar said it was an important day for Pakistan because everyone is equal before the law. He said all charges against Faiz Hameed were proven and the punishment awarded to him was fully in line with legal and justice standards.
He added that the army has always maintained a firm self-accountability process, and the nation has now seen a clear example of it.
Tarar said Faiz Hameed has also been punished in the Top City case, and further investigations will continue in matters linked to political interference.
“Anyone who crosses the red line faces consequences, and that is the foundation of a strong state,” he said.
THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING: VAWDA
Senator Faisal Vawda also praised the army’s move, saying the institution’s internal system of reward and punishment has sent a clear message that no one is above the law.
He said that the accountability process has only just begun, adding that anyone harming the country will face strict action.
Vawda added that the same principle applies to those involved in the events of May 9, noting that internal accountability within the army reinforces the stance that no culprit or facilitator will be spared.
He said even PTI leaders who believe they are “safe” will also face accountability if they crossed legal or national limits.
He stressed that in 75 years, such a powerful figure had never been held accountable, calling it a historic moment for the country.
According to Vawda, the credit goes to Army Chief General Asim Munir, whom he praised for “laying the foundation of real accountability within his own institution.”
He remarked, adding that the state has sent a clear message that the era of unchecked power is over.
