The federal government has clarified reports about a possible reduction in passport fees in Pakistan.

The Ministry of Interior has confirmed that no proposal to reduce passport fees is currently under consideration.

The clarification came through a written response submitted to the Senate on Friday (today).

The Ministry of Interior provided a yearly breakdown of passport fee collections.

During the financial year 2021-22, the government collected Rs. 21.62 billion.

The amount increased to Rs. 34.50 billion in 2022-23 and reached Rs. 50.91 billion in 2023-24.

Collections rose further to Rs. 64.39 billion during 2024-25.

However, the amount dropped to Rs. 48.52 billion in 2025-26.

The government has not announced any plans to lower passport charges, despite these collections.

The ministry explained that producing electronic passports costs more than issuing traditional passports.

Pakistan is gradually moving toward an electronic passport system to improve document security.

The new passports follow standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Current passport fees in Pakistan

According to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, a normal 36-page machine-readable passport costs Rs. 4,500 for five years.

The urgent processing fee for the same passport is Rs7,500.

The normal fee is Rs6,700 for a 10-year passport, while urgent processing costs Rs11,200.

Electronic passports cost more comparatively because they contain advanced security features.

A five-year, 36-page e-passport costs Rs9,000 under normal processing and Rs15,000 under urgent processing.

A 10-year e-passport costs Rs13,500 for normal processing and Rs22,500 for urgent processing.

E-passports contain electronic chips that store personal and biometric information, unlike traditional passports.

These features help verify identities and improve security during international travel.

Citizens can check the latest charges through the official passport website.
