When will PIA London flights resume?

Web desk: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced plans to resume direct flight operations to London from March 2026, representing a major step in the national carrier’s gradual return to main international transit routes.

According to official sources, the airline has formally informed London’s Heathrow Airport of its intention to restart services as part of its broader growth in the United Kingdom.

PIA London flights

PIA restarted limited UK operations in October this year after the British authorities lifted a five-year ban in July, allowing Pakistani airlines to once again apply for permission to start flights to the UK.

Following the reduction of restrictions, PIA secured approval for four weekly flight slots at London’s Heathrow Airport.

These valuable slots had previously been temporarily assigned to Turkish Airlines to confirm they were not lost while PIA’s UK operations remained suspended.

Sources explained that this temporary arrangement helped the national carrier retain its presence at one of the world’s busiest airports during the suspension phase.

Facing regulatory hurdles now reducing, PIA has confirmed in writing that it plans to resume direct London flights starting in March next year 2026.

PIA privatisation

The announcement comes during major developments in the airline’s privatisation process. At the beginning of the week, a joint venture led by the Arif Habib Corporation emerged as the highest bidder for a 75 percent stake in PIA.

The consortium reportedly submitted a bid of Rs135 billion, exceeding a competing offer from a group led by Lucky Cement during a competitive bidding process that was broadcast live.

As a result of the bid, the Arif Habib-led group confirmed that Fauji Fertiliser Company Limited (FFCL) has joined the partnership.

Moreover, the consortium said the inclusion of FFCL would strengthen the airline through financial backing and business expertise.

Fauji Fertiliser is also expected to play a role in the management structure alongside Arif Habib Corporation.

The group announced plans to invest Rs125 billion in the first year to enhance ground operations and overall service quality.

Moreover, it aims to significantly expand PIA’s fleet by increasing the number of operational aircraft from the current 18 to 62 in the coming years.

At the sametime, adviser to the Prime Minister on privatisation Muhammad Ali told Reuters that the government expects the new owner to take over airline operations by April, subject to regulatory approvals.

The privatisation process is now advancing toward final clearance by the Privatisation Commission board and the federal cabinet.

Authorities expect contract signing within the next two weeks, followed by a 90-day period to complete regulatory and legal obligations.

If carried out as intended, the resumption of London flights and new investment could signal a turning point for PIA’s international operations and long-lasting recovery.
