Web desk: A winter storm brought a mix of snow and ice to the northeastern United States early Saturday.
Conditions began to improve by mid morning, but travel problems continued across the region.
Authorities advised people to stay off the roads due to slippery and dangerous conditions.
States of emergency were declared in both New York and New Jersey.
Flight cancellations in Northeast US
This has disrupted the post holiday travel for many people and forced officials in New York and New Jersey to declare weather emergencies.
“The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority, and I continue to urge extreme caution throughout the duration of this storm,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall totals ranged from six to 10 inches across parts of New York, from Syracuse to Long Island, as well as areas of Connecticut.
Meteorologist Bob Oravec said New York City recorded two to four inches of snow overnight. With 4.3 inches measured in Central Park, the city’s highest total since 2022.
“The good news is that the heaviest snow is done,” Oravec said. “Only a few flurries remain this morning, and those will taper off by the afternoon.”
Despite the easing weather, air travel was heavily affected. By mid morning, more than 14,400 domestic flights within the United States were cancelled or delayed.
Most disruptions were reported at major airports in the New York area, including JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.
Flight tracking data also showed that about 2,100 international flights scheduled to arrive or depart the US were cancelled.
Airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue Airways, said they waived change fees to help passengers adjust their travel plans due to the storm.
Ice storm warnings and winter weather advisories remained in effect across large parts of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
New Jersey and Pennsylvania also imposed restrictions on commercial vehicles on several roads and interstate highways.
