Iqbal Afridi: PTI MNA's sons apply for asylum in Italy

WEB DESK: Two sons of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Muhammad Iqbal Afridi have applied for political asylum in Italy.

Social media reports claimed that the PTI MNA’s son has applied for asylum in Italy and he was involved in human trafficking and drug smuggling.

Senior journalist Irfan Khan told Pakistan Connect that he approached Iqbal Afridi to confirm if the reports regarding the asylum applications of his son are true.

The PTI MNA revealed to the senior journalist that not one, but his two sons are currently in Italy and working at a local hotel.

He said that they took loan from their relatives and went abroad for jobs after they failed to get one in Pakistan. Afridi told the Senior journalist that his sons were university graduates and applied for multiple jobs on merit at the time when Mehmood Khan was the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

However, the PTI leader requested the Chief Minister not to consider their sons for jobs even if they meet the merit criteria because people will assume that the MNA used his influence for his sons’ jobs.

When the journalist pressed on the asylum matter, the MNA reiterated that his sons are working in Italy and they have filed their applications.

Iqbal Afridi’s inappropriate comments

Iqbal Afridi earlier came in the spotlight when he objected to a woman’s outfit during a meeting of a National Assembly standing committee, following which the panel’s chairman, Muhammad Idrees, apologised over the matter.

Afridi objected to the attire of a high-ranking K-Electric official who attended the power division committee’s meeting today at Parliament House. The lawmaker said he raised the issue after the KE official had briefed the panel and left the meeting room.

According to a notification shared by the NA Committees’ official X account, one of the items on the meeting’s agenda was a “comprehensive report/implementation status” of previous recommendations about issues raised by MNAs Afridi and Syed Rafiullah, regarding the disconnection, overbilling and unannounced load-shedding of electricity in Karachi and erstwhile Fata.

Afridi is not a member of the NA committee but was present as a lawmaker from NA-27 (Khyber) who had raised the matter of load-shedding.

Afridi termed the KE official’s attire “objectionable”, adding that she “should not have attended the meeting in such an outfit”.
