IPL broadcasts banned in Bangladesh after Mustafizur Rahman row

WEB DESK: The Government of Bangladesh has decided to completely ban the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 in the country.

The decision was taken in the ‘public interest’ after the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad, following the instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that no reason was communicated by the BCCI for dropping Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. This has caused distress among the people of Bangladesh. So, the decision of not broadcasting IPL in the country has been taken in the ‘public interest’.

Earlier, KKR picked the fast bowler at the IPL auction in December, worth $1 million, and dropped him later.

KKR has advocated the removal of Mustafizur Rehman by saying that the bowler was being removed after the advice of the BCCI. No explanatory statement has yet been issued by the Indian Board.

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, later said the decision was taken “considering recent developments”.

Following the removal of the national fast bowler, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) not only imposed a ban on the IPL, but also has approached the International Cricket Council (ICC), asking it to move their T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India.

The BCB also wrote a letter to BCCI, asking them to explain the reason behind the removal of Mustafizur Rehman from the IPL squad.
