Will Margalla Avenue finally solve Islamabad’s traffic problems?

Margalla Avenue Islamabad

WEB DESK: The Margalla Avenue is one of the major projects in Islamabad that has not only eased the daily traffic tensions but also has completely changed the flow of traffic through the capital.

Work on the final links of Islamabad’s Margalla Avenue is entering its closing stages, as it is expected that the work will be completed in 2026.

A direct bypass for the city

The project basically provides a seamless connection between the Grand Trunk (GT) Road (N-5) at Sangjani and the Murree Expressway (E75) at Bhara Kahu.

By passing near sectors like D-12, E-11, and F-10/F-11, it allows the drivers to avoid the city’s most crowded central areas.

Progress on the missing links

The development of the project has been carried out in stages. The first 10-kilometre section, ranging from GT road to D-12, was opened to traffic in mid-2023.

Current efforts are focused on the ‘missing links’, which include a 3.4-kilometre extension to the M-1 motorway and a vital link to sector E-11.

According to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the construction process has been facing a delay due to technical and funding challenges.

Boosting regional connectivity

The Margalla Avenue is not just a local road; it is a joint venture involving the CDA and the National Highway Authority (NHA).

It is highly expected that the project will link with the Rawalpindi Rind Road network. This will improve the connection between the twin cities and national highways.

Looking ahead to 2026

The highway will offer a faster, smoother journey in Islamabad if the ‘missing links’ are completed.

According to the officials, the Government is considering these large road projects as its top priority.
