Huge setback for India? Tilak Verma ruled out of three T20Is vs NZ matches

The Indian cricket team has suffered a great setback ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 as one of their batters, Tilak Varma, was ruled out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand.

Tilak Verma ruled out

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Tilak Varma underwent a surgery for testicular torsion in Rajkot on Wednesday.

After the surgery, the doctors have advised the cricketer to take complete rest.

According to the sources, Tilak Varma’s availability for the World Cup match against the United States on February 7 is also not certain.

This is a concern for the Indian team. Tilak Varma has been a consistent and important player in T20s.

Last year, he scored 567 runs in 18 innings and played a key role in India’s batting.

The BCCI said the surgery was successful and Tilak Varma’s condition is now stable.

He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and will return to Hyderabad on Friday.

During the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26, after the match between Hyderabad and Bengal, he suffered severe abdominal pain.

He did not have any obvious injury during the match. After complaining of pain, medical scans were done. After that doctors decided that a surgery was needed.

He was taken to a hospital in Rajkot and had minor abdominal surgery on January 7.

He was discharged the next morning and is now set to return to Hyderabad.

The board has not announced when he will return to play cricket.

The decision on his participation in the last two T20I matches will depend on when he resumes training and completes all fitness requirements.

Will Tilak Varma be in T20 World Cup 2026?

Hyderabad coach Ravi Teja said, “He had a very minor surgery in Rajkot, and there is nothing serious or worrying,” reports the Indian media.

The coach further talked about his recovery, “He should recover in three to four days. Tilak is currently with the team and will return to Hyderabad,” he said.

He further added, “I fully expect him to be fit before the T20 series against New Zealand; it will take him about a week to recover.”
