On Sunday, Iran warned that in case of a US attack during the ongoing wave of protests, it would strike US military and shipping targets.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said, “In the event of a military attack by the US, both the occupied territory and centres of the US military and shipping will be our legitimate targets.”
The warning of Tehran comes after sources are saying that Israel is on high alert for the possibility of US intervention due to protests in Iran.
The country has been facing demonstrations since December 28. The protests are mainly due to the economic woes of the Iranian people, which include soaring inflation. The Iranian authorities, on the other hand, are accusing Israel and the US of spreading unrest.
In recent days, the US President has repeatedly threatened to intervene. He has also warned Iran’s leaders not to use force against protestors. He said on Saturday that the US is ready to help.
During the Israeli security consultations over the weekend, the sources who were present did not explain what Israel’s high alert footing actually means. In 2025, Iran and Israel fought a 12-day war in which was later joined by the US. UYS supported Israel by launching airstrikes on Iran.
According to an Israeli source, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a phone call on Saturday, discussed the possibility of US intervention in Iran.
The phone call has been confirmed by a US official; however, he did not confirm what topics were discussed in that conversation.
The protests are due to the economic woes of the Iranian people. Till now, sources suggest that about 45 people have been killed during the protests.
Trump has been acting very aggressively recently; it will not be completely out of his character to interfere in Iran.
