Karachi’s weather took a cloudy turn before midday on Thursday, with rain expected to follow later in the afternoon. The city’s temperature hovered around 23 degrees, while air quality remained fair, offering brief comfort before a shift in conditions.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rainfall across Karachi this afternoon, followed by a cooler spell starting Friday. The change is linked to a westerly weather system that is moving into Sindh and is being strengthened by moisture from the Arabian Sea.
Rain likely by early afternoon
According to the Met Office, dry weather in Karachi is expected to give way to mostly cloudy skies, with rain and possible thunderstorms during the day. A forecast issued by the Duty Forecasting Officer on behalf of the Chief Meteorologist said light to moderate rain is likely in Karachi Division on Thursday, January 22.
Weather tracking websites suggest rain could begin between 2 pm and 4 pm, with a sixty to sixty-six percent chance during that window. Another forecast points to an earlier start, around 1 pm, depending on how quickly clouds build over the city.
Deputy Director of the Met Department Anjum Nazir Zaigham said the weather system is expected to enter Sindh from Thursday, bringing rainfall first to the western districts before spreading further.
Temperatures to fall
A noticeable drop in temperatures is expected from Friday, with colder winds from Quetta likely to reach Karachi. These winds could blow at speeds of up to 40 to 45 kilometres per hour, adding a sharp chill to the air.
Weather officials say the minimum temperature in Karachi could fall to single digits from Friday, marking one of the colder spells of the season. The system is expected to alter overall weather patterns across the city, bringing cooler days and colder nights.
Rain across Sindh and beyond
Other parts of Sindh may also receive rain today and on January 23. Areas likely to see showers include Hyderabad, Dadu, Jacobabad, Naushehro Feroz, Kashmore, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas and Ghotki.
The Met Office has also forecast rain in several districts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman and Zhob, with moderate to heavy snowfall expected in some northern areas.
The PMD said relevant authorities, including the Governor’s House, the Sindh Chief Secretary, the Mayor of Karachi and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, have been informed.
Emergency and essential services such as K-Electric and Rescue 1122 have also been alerted ahead of the expected weather change.
