Case registered in Bhati Chowk manhole tragedy

A case has been registered in the tragic incident that occurred in the Bhati Chowk area of Lahore, where a mother and her daughter lost their lives after falling into an open sewage manhole.

According to police sources, a case has been registered at Bhati Gate Police Station on the complaint of the woman’s father, Sajid Hussain.

The FIR names Project Manager Asghar Sindhu, Safety In-charge Daniyal, and Site In-charge Ahmed Nawaz as accused, citing negligence during ongoing development work in the area.

As per the FIR, Sajid Hussain stated that his son received a phone call informing him that his sister, Sadia, and her daughter had fallen into a manhole. Later, Sadia’s husband, Ghulam Murtaza, confirmed that her body had been recovered from the sewer.

The incident took place in front of Data Darbar near Bhati Gate, where construction work was underway and the sewage manhole had been left uncovered. The victims were returning after attending court proceedings and were getting off a rickshaw when Sadia reportedly slipped, causing both her and her daughter to fall into the open manhole.

Family members said the manhole was approximately 20 to 25 feet deep and had no protective cover or warning signs. Both victims died on the spot.

Police have initiated an investigation, while the incident has raised serious concerns over safety measures and negligence at construction sites in the city. Authorities have assured legal action against those found responsible.

Earlier rescue teams have found the woman’s body, who, along with her daughter, allegedly fell into a manhole near Bhati Gate, Lahore.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Faisal Kamran said while speaking to the media that the woman’s body was found from the sewerage pipeline, which is three kilometres away from the manhole.

The DIG said that due to the heavy flow of sewage, the dead body travelled that far. He also confirmed that the top police officials and security individuals are looking into the matter carefully.

Faisal Kamran said that, on the direction of Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, the heads of all relevant departments are on the ground and investigating the matter.
