Pakistani actress Javeria Saud has openly expressed her praise of Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for what she called “exceptional work” by the Chief Minister in the province, while also calling on citizens to take responsibility for looking after public facilities.
Speaking in a recent interview, Javeria said that Maryam Nawaz is doing “very good work” and credited her for visible changes in the condition of Punjab, especially in Lahore.
However, she emphasised that it is not just the government’s responsibility. According to the actress, public cooperation is equally required to ensure a lasting change.
She highlighted that while the government of Punjab installs public facilities like trash cans, some people steal and sell them. She also raised the problem of gutter lids being taken off and sold, which posed risks to the public.
“The government keeps spending on public welfare, but people also have to take care of these things” she said emphasising that there is a need for collective responsibility for progress.
Javeria said that she hoped similar development work could be done in Karachi as well. She said she was born and brought up in Karachi, but she belongs to Punjab and considers herself a Saraiki.
Addressing the perceptions about her background, she said many attribute her to as Urdu-speaking background, which she isn’t and is proud of her Punjabi roots.
When asked to compare between Karachi and Lahore, the actress said that she has a deep love for her country whether it is Karachi, Lahore or Quetta. However, she conceded that Lahore seems to be cleaner and better in roads, giving the credit to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for such improvements.
Javeria said people naturally have a sense of attachment to some places where they spent their childhood. While Karachi has special memories for her including her birth, and marriage but she thinks the development of Lahore needs to be given credit.
