Three-day Basant 2026 festival begins in Lahore today

The city of Lahore was once again swept up in the magic of Basant as the three-day festival officially began at exactly midnight transforming the skyline into a vibrant display of colorful kites.

Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari, inaugurated the Basant celebrations by flying a kite from the rooftop of Delhi Gate.

The moment marked the start of festivities across the city with rooftops echoing with laughter, drumbeats and chants of “Bo-Kaata.”

The atmosphere of Lahore was filled with joy and color as young people continued flying kites from rooftops while enthusiastic crowds poured onto the streets to watch kites soaring and being cut in the sky.

Women also actively participated in the celebrations welcoming spring with henna-decorated hands, colorful attire, and traditional delicacies.

Many women were seen flying kites themselves from rooftops adding to the festive spirit.

Streets and neighborhoods across the city presented a lively scene adorned with kites.

Despite rising inflation the demand for kites and strings remained high with supplies reportedly running scarce in several areas.

The festival brought a wave of excitement and renewed energy to Lahore reviving the city’s long-standing cultural tradition of celebrating Basant.

Lahoris are celebrating Basant from today. In Pakistan, the Basant Kite Flying Festival is mainly celebrated in Lahore.

Large crowds of men, women, and young people take part in the event. Many competitions are held, including kite flying contests.

People can shop for different items and enjoy a wide variety of foods. This includes traditional Pakistani dishes.

Sweet dishes like laddus, gulab jamuns, rass malai, and jalebis are especially popular and are enjoyed by local people and foreign tourists.

The festival is a fun experience for both locals and tourists. This year too, many people from across the country are flocking to Lahore.
