For anyone looking to buy a daily driver and family car with a budget of around Rs15 lacs, one factor that every buyer demands is the fuel efficiency. At this price point, buyers won’t find hybrids or the newer Japanese 660cc cars known for high mileage.
So, which cars make sense in this budget? Buyers look at options that are affordable and reasonably efficient. The models available for most of these cars rely on older engine technology. Some use basic EFI, while others are carburettor-based, so they cannot match the fuel efficiency of modern engines with direct injection or dual jet systems.
Top choices
The top choice to start with is the Suzuki Mehran EFI upper model and the Suzuki Cultus with the same EFI engine.
Suzuki Mehran
The Suzuki Mehran continues to be a logical choice for budget-conscious buyers. It runs on the F8B 800cc three-cylinder engine. Weighing just around 650kg, the engine faces little resistance, which helps with fuel economy.
Within a 15-lac budget, a well-maintained 2017-18 upper-model Mehran is usually affordable. Parts are cheap, mechanics are familiar with the car, and resale is strong. It offers the essentials: an AC, heater, seating for four to five people, and reliable transportation.
However, the rear suspension uses leaf springs, which means ride comfort is limited. The AC also struggles in peak summer heat, from June to July, when temperatures can reach 40 to 43 degree celsius.
Suzuki Cultus
The first-generation Suzuki Cultus is another strong option. It uses the G10B 1,000cc four-cylinder EFI engine, replacing the older three-cylinder carburettor engine. City fuel economy with the AC on is around 13 to 14 kilometres per litre.
In this budget, you can find a 2012-14 Cultus VXR in good condition. Its cabin is more spacious than Mehran’s, and the ride is smoother thanks to independent shock absorbers at the rear. Plastic interior panels also reduce cabin noise.
The AC is an improvement over Mehran’s but may still struggle during extreme heat. For buyers prioritising fuel efficiency with reasonable comfort, the Cultus EFI is the best value in this category.
Less fuel-efficient cars
Some cars in this budget offer moderate fuel efficiency. They are reliable and comfortable but rely on older engine designs, so mileage is not their strongest point.
Suzuki Alto
The 5th-generation Suzuki Alto 1,000cc uses the F10A carburettor engine, originally designed for 4×4 jeeps. In city driving with AC, it delivers around 10 to 12 km per litre. The key advantage is AC performance, which remains effective even in hot weather, thanks to the smaller cabin and robust engine torque.
Daihatsu Cuore
The Daihatsu Cuore offers another alternative. It comes with an 850cc ED-series engine. Fuel economy ranges from 8 to10 km per litre for the automatic model and 11 to 13 km per litre for the manual, depending on driving style and engine condition.
The Cuore is chosen less for fuel efficiency and more for comfort. Its cabin is more spacious than Mehran’s, and the ride quality is noticeably better. However, in the local market, a well-maintained 2008-09 Cuore can cost as much as a 2015-16 Mehran, and finding a clean example can be difficult.
Which car to choose?
For a budget under 15 lacs, the choice comes down to trade-offs between fuel efficiency, comfort, and AC performance.
If mileage is the top priority, the Suzuki Cultus EFI is the best option, balancing smooth four-cylinder performance, decent space, and 13 to 14 km per litre fuel economy. The Suzuki Mehran remains a safe financial choice, offering low maintenance and reliable utility.
For those prioritising comfort over economy, the Daihatsu Cuore and Suzuki Alto provide better ride quality and AC performance but with higher fuel costs.
