Senior Afghan journalist Bilal Sarwary has confirmed the death of Noor Wali Mehsud, leader of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), following a powerful explosion and heavy gunfire late Thursday in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw district.

Initial accounts say the strike targeted a parked Land Cruiser believed to be carrying TTP members.

Social media posts, including purported audio messages attributed to TTP insiders, further claim that two potential successors, Qari Saifullah Mehsud and Khalid Mehsud were also killed in the attack.

Security personnel cordoned off parts of Shahr-e-Naw after the incident, and an investigation is said to be under way.

Further updates are expected as officials and official sources release verified details.

Roads in parts of Shahr-e-Naw were reportedly restricted as security forces swept the area. Authorities said further details would be shared after preliminary findings are complete.

Moreover he said the operation stood out for the “precision of the strike,” suggesting Pakistan employed more advanced drone technology than it has previously demonstrated.

The analysis speculated that such accuracy could indicate access to new tools.

The journalist further argued that the episode hints at a shifting balance in the region, with Pakistan seeking to reassert its strategic control.

Independent Afghan media outlets, including Amu TV, report that TTP leader Noor Wali Mehsud has been killed, citing inside sources.

Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid acknowledged an explosion earlier in the area but downplayed the incident, saying an investigation is underway.
