Who is Zohran Mamdani
Zohran Kwame Mamdani is an American politician who has served as the 112th mayor of New York City since January 2026. He was born to Indian parents, Mahmood Mamdani and renowned filmmaker Mira Nair.
Mamdani initially got involved in politics in New York City when he volunteered for Ali Najmi’s campaign in the 2015 special election for the City Council’s 23rd district. When Mamdani saw that Heems, an Indian-American rapper from New York who co-founded the alternative hip-hop group Das Racist, was supporting Najmi, he was motivated to join his campaign.
Later, Mamdani joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) chapter in New York City in 2017 and worked for the campaign of Khader El-Yateem, a democratic socialist and Palestinian Lutheran minister running for New York City Council.
Mamdani declared his decision to run for mayor of New York City on October 23, 2024. He advocated for free city buses and rent freezes for rent-stabilized housing as part of his proposal.
During his 2025 campaign, President Donald Trump threatened to cut off federal funding for New York City in early November if Mamdani won the mayoral election.
Mamdani won the November 4, 2025, mayoral election. In addition to being the city’s first Muslim and Indian American mayor, he is also the youngest mayor since 1892.
