The Sindh High Court has ordered the removal of an illegal food street set up on the service road in Korangi, Karachi, according to the reports.
The decision was made by the court’s constitutional bench during a hearing attended by officials from the Ministry of Local Government, the Town Nazim, and the Deputy Commissioner.
The court directed the authorities to submit a detailed report within two weeks on how they will enforce this order.
Illegal food street in Korangi
The petitioner, represented by Advocate Haseeb Jamali, said service roads are vital for smooth traffic and cannot be legally converted for commercial use.
He added that the town administration does not have the authority to change the status of service roads.
Jamali also said that illegal shops on service roads disrupt traffic, increase the risk of accidents, and endanger lives.
“Maintaining the integrity of service roads is essential for public safety,” he said.
In response, the town administration defended the food street, saying that it was set up for public convenience and currently has 144 temporary shops and stalls.
The court rejected this argument. It said no commercial activity is allowed on service roads and ordered the immediate removal of the food street.
The bench further emphasised the legal importance of keeping service roads clear for traffic and safety.
Karachi water supply
Separately, water supply in many parts of Karachi will remain suspended or partially reduced for four days starting Monday because of urgent repair work on a major water pipeline, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Sunday.
According to the reports, a KWSC spokesperson said a leakage was found in the 84-inch Phase-I main water line in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 19.
The leak made it necessary to carry out immediate repair work, according to the reports.
The corporation said the repairs are being done to control leakages and improve the city’s water system, especially ahead of Ramazan.
