Clashes, alleged irregularities reported ahead of Bangladesh elections 2026

bangladesh elections

Bangladesh is currently facing a period of uncertainty as the 2026 elections, to be conducted on February 12, 2026, raised concerns over rising political tensions and alleged irregularities reported ahead of voting in several parts of the country.

According to the post shared on the social media platform X (previously Twitter), Mohonpur, Rajshahi-3, activists linked to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami were involved in clashes before polling had begun.

According to the claim, rival groups tore down each other’s election camps, leading to street confrontations and growing anxiety among local residents. The post suggested that ordinary people felt caught between competing political forces, with fears about safety before and after voting.

Irregularities reported

However, further claims on X alleged serious violations of election procedures. One post said that voting materials were being stamped overnight at the Dhankunda polling centre in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, before official voting hours had begun.

The claim alleged that election staff sympathetic to Jamaat-e-Islami were marking ballots in favour of a specific symbol.

Another post shared what it described as video evidence showing activists occupying polling centres and casting votes during the night, ahead of polling day.

The post called the alleged actions election rigging and said such practices undermined voters’ rights. The post said, “This is outright election rigging and a theft of people’s rights. Such an election is unacceptable.”

These claims have not been independently verified by election authorities or observers. Bangladesh’s election commission has not publicly responded to the specific allegations mentioned in the posts.

Train travel to vote

Bangladesh’s public is excited to participate in the elections of 2026, as millions of people are rushing towards home to reclaim their country.

A post on X described the election as the first genuinely competitive vote in decades, following the 2024 uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s long rule.
