The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) started operations at Sost Dry Port in April 2018, according to reports on Sunday.
At the start, the focus was on improving infrastructure, according to the reports. Facilities were upgraded to meet the needs of traders and to make sure of smooth cargo handling.
Later, it was noticed that the port used to close every year after November 30.
During this time, a large amount of cargo remained stuck, especially in Kashgar and nearby areas in China.
National Logistics Corporation increased its capacity and added new facilities so cargo movement could continue during the closure period to resolve this issue.
As a result, the port remained open in 2024–25 and 2025–26, according to the reports. Last year, around 597 vehicles arrived during the winter period.
This year, 320 vehicles have already arrived in just one month. More than 400 to 500 vehicles are expected by April.
The biggest challenges were weather and energy supply. NLC installed a solar system and three large generators. Internet services were also upgraded to keep customs and other systems running.
Heating systems were installed in offices and residential areas. The temperature here drops to minus 25 to minus 30 degrees Celsius.
This is the second year of winter operations. Now the port can function without major interruptions.
So far, there have been three heavy snowfalls. Even then, loading and unloading continued. The workforce has improved and management systems are working better.
This dry port has become very important for the region. Around 95 per cent of the staff are local people. NLC is also supporting education, health, and sports in the area.
At the Sost High School, NLC built a new block. This helped in holding events and exams.
Classrooms were also improved. NLC also supports local sports events. These include marathon races, Tour de Khunjerab, and Shandur Polo.
Local youth are encouraged to take part in hiking and other activities. NLC supports them and motivates them to do well in education and sports. The aim is to help them represent their area and the country in a better way.
