India in emergency mode over Usman Tariq

Usman Tariq India

With the showdown between Pakistan and India at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 nearing, there is one storyline dominating the build-up and that is India’s visible unease over Pakistan’s mystery spinner Usman Tariq.

What was at first cautious respect has turned into obvious concern. India’s preparation methods, public comments and game talk all indicate a conscious search to find some form of answers to a bowler everyone struggles to decode.

“Out of Syllabus” Admission

India captain Suryakumar Yadav summed up the challenge describing Usman Tariq as an “out of syllabus” problem. The comment was striking. Instead of projecting calm authority, it had suggested uncertainty.

Such language indicates a side fearful of the unknown and especially against a bowler who changes his variations through the game to defy conventional reading.

Nets Built Around One Bowler

The way India has responded has been telling. Training sessions were said to have been redesigned to replicate the unusual bowling action of Tariq. Bowlers were told to mimic how he releases his balls and where he throws them.

When a team bases its preparation on a single man, by preparing for one individual, it is respect, but it is also anxiety. Even Suryakumar was caught informally imitating Tariq’s action to aid in the preparation of team members.

Tactical Debate Turns Public

The discussion has spread beyond the dressing room. Former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came to support the action of Tariq’s action but later proposed tactical measures to put pressure on the umpires.

The debate itself is an underlying of the discomfort. Instead of focusing on the selection of shots, attention is now being paid to the legality and loopholes.

Match-Up Favours Pakistan

India’s composition of the squad is also a reason why they are fearful. They have a big left-handed presence in the team which was encouraged by coach Gautam Gambhir.

Tariq’s off-spin naturally angles away from left-handers, while his skidding straighter delivery has already troubled top-order batters.

In the midst of the noise and the scrutiny, Tariq is composed. For Pakistan, the psychological edge may already be won, before a single ball is bowled.
