The Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has started issuing Punjab registration numbers to vehicles and motorcycles previously registered in other provinces.

The new system is now in effect in Rawalpindi Division, where the officials have already begun processing fresh re-registration requests from February 14.

Biometric verification has been made mandatory under a newly introduced Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

Which vehicles can get registered?

Vehicles of all types and engine capacities that were registered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are now eligible for registration in Punjab.

The Punjab government has also allowed vehicles registered under federal authorities to be transferred and re-registered in the province.

Officials said the registration fee will remain the same as the rate already applicable in Punjab.

Documents required

Applicants must first obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the excise office of the province where the vehicle is currently registered.

They are also required to provide a vehicle clearance certificate, a Police 15 report, the complete vehicle file and an affidavit from the owner.

Once the process is completed, a new Punjab registration number will be issued for the relevant city. The previous registration number will be cancelled, and the excise office of the concerned province will be informed.

How much will it cost?

According to the official website of the excise and taxation department, transfer fees vary depending on engine capacity.

For vehicles up to 1000cc, the fee is around Rs2,750. For vehicles between 1000cc and 1800cc, it is about Rs5,500.

For higher engine capacities, the fee is approximately Rs11,000. Larger or newly registered vehicles may also be charged a percentage of their assessed value.

In addition, owners will need to pay an annual token tax in Punjab and small service charges for processing.

Why has the move been introduced?

Officials said the initiative aims to bring thousands of vehicles already operating on Punjab’s roads into the provincial tax system.

They added that the measure is expected to make the registration process simpler for owners who live and work in Punjab.

This will ensure that vehicles using the province’s roads contribute to local transport and infrastructure costs.
