To simplify the process of vehicle buying, selling and transfer for citizens and overseas Pakistanis the Pak ID App has been officially launched.
Vehicle ownership can now be transferred through biometric verification by entering the vehicle number, chassis number and owner’s name in the app effectively eliminating the chances of fake transfers.
The launch ceremony was attended by Director General Excise Umar Sher Chatha and NADRA’s Chief Project Officer Rehman Qamar.
Previously overseas Pakistanis were required to get an authority letter attested by the embassy to transfer their vehicles. Now this process has been made fully online through the app using biometric verification.
Umar Sher Chatha said that thousands of vehicles were being driven on open letters due to delays in biometric verification. However by integrating the systems of both institutions biometric facilities have now been provided.
He added that this service is available via the Pak ID App from today and the re-registration process of vehicles from other provinces has also begun this month.
NADRA’s Chief Project Officer Rehman Qamar stated that in addition to biometrics facial recognition will also be available on the app. If a citizen is unable to provide biometric verification they can be verified through facial recognition instead.
This initiative has been introduced to make the vehicle buying, selling and transfer process faster, more transparent and secure for citizens and overseas Pakistanis virtually eliminating the risk of fraud.
Punjab opens vehicle re-registration from other provinces
In a separate development the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department has started issuing Punjab registration numbers to vehicles and motorcycles previously registered in other provinces.
The new system is now in effect in Rawalpindi Division, where the officials have already begun processing fresh re-registration requests from February 14.
Biometric verification has been made mandatory under a newly introduced Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
Which vehicles can get registered?
Vehicles of all types and engine capacities that were registered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Sindh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir are now eligible for registration in Punjab.
The Punjab government has also allowed vehicles registered under federal authorities to be transferred and re-registered in the province.
Officials said the registration fee will remain the same as the rate already applicable in Punjab.
