The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has ordered all public and private universities across the country to introduce mandatory three credit hour course on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in every undergraduate and postgraduate course.
This decision is a reflection of the accelerated change in the global educational and technological scene, in which AI is becoming increasingly central in operations across various sectors.
Reacting to a Changing Global Landscape
The move is coming at a time when AI is having a strong impact on education, healthcare, economy and governance as well.
Recognising the rise in its importance, the HEC has emphasised the need for equipping students with knowledge of AI to prepare them for new challenges and opportunities in the world.
According to a letter written to vice chancellors and heads of universities, the HEC Executive Director affirmed that AI education is no longer a choice to be added to the curriculum, but is an urgent need.
Concentrate on Digital Literacy and Ethics of Responsibility
The commission has emphasised the need for students to gain practical knowledge of digital literacy, ethical responsibility, data privacy, data transparency, and impact of artificial intelligence on the broader social context.
The goal is to make sure that the graduates are equipped with the skills meeting the international standards and possess the capacity to safely navigate through AI-enabling environments.
Flexible Implementation with Core Requirements
Universities have been given freedom with the way of introducing the course. It may be offered as an elective subject, as an interdisciplinary subject or as a supporting subject in existing programs.
However, the curriculum must cover basic concepts of AI, its use in different domains, AI ethics, fairness and accountability.
Institutions are also allowed to customise the course content depending on the nature of their academic programs.
Implementation from Fall 2026
The mandatory AI course will be offered in all degree programs starting from Fall 2026 academic session.
Through this initiative, the HEC is determined to equip Pakistani students to play an effective role in a world moving toward AI and, consequently, make the country more economically competitive at the global level.
