Islamabad launches new cleanliness plan to improve sanitation

Islamabad cleanliness plan

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced some new steps for improving the sanitation services in Islamabad.

The decisions were made at a meeting, which was chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa at CDA headquarters. Senior officials reviewed the city’s current waste management system and talked about reforms.

The CDA will set up additional waste containers and fix damaged waste bins in the capital. Additional waste trolleys and dustbins will also be put up at important places.

A three bin waste segregation system will be introduced into the commercial centres for advertisements of recycling. Traders will be included in cleanliness campaigns in markets.

There will be committees of the mohalla to involve community participation. Fines will be imposed on individuals and businesses who are involved in littering.

The Islamabad Food Authority will take action against the restaurants which do not handle waste properly.

A 24-hour monitoring control room will also be set up to monitor the sanitation operations, and to respond to public complaints. Helpline phone numbers will be placed on digital day screens throughout city.

Officials said that sanitation staff will be given wireless communication devices and new uniforms, to help them perform their job better. A system of registration of collectors of waste will also be introduced.

CDA officials have expressed hopes that the measures would help make Islamabad a cleaner, environment-friendly place to live in.
