No shelter, only fear: Tehran’s street cats living under bombs — read to know the trauma of cats

Iran-Israel war and cats in Tehran

On a dusty rooftop in Tehran, three innocent souls are sitting quietly and looking toward the city. They are not soldiers or politicians, nor do they know the meaning of war. They are Tehran’s street cats, silently witnessing the destruction of the Iran-Israel war. They are sitting, confused, and get scared when the loud sound of bombs echoes across the skyline, and the ground sometimes shakes beneath their small paws.

On February 28, the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. Following the US-Israel airstrikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Syed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed. After his killing, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on US military bases in Gulf Countries including Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Oman.

However, amid the Iran-Israel war, there is a video of three cats that is going viral. In the video, it can be seen that three small cats are sitting on the dusty rooftop and silently watching bombs hitting different buildings in Iran.

Cats in war

The Iran-Israel war is good for nothing, and the entire region will suffer after this war. At the same time, this war is confusing for Tehran’s street cats. These cats are not aware of the politics of war, but they surely witness the loud sounds of bombs, fire and smoke. These cats are continuously in fear due to the constant danger around them.

Many of Tehran’s street cats spend their lives wandering the streets, searching for food and shelter. Normally, they hide under cars, in markets, or on rooftops to stay safe. But during the Iran-Israel war, even these places no longer feel secure. The sound of jets, sirens, and bombs forces them to stay alert every moment. Instead of resting, they sit quietly and watch the city burn in the distance.

Trauma of cats

Animals, particularly cats, suffer a lot during war. The loud sound of bombs, fire in a building and smoke in the air cause extreme anxiety and stress in animals. Several studies confirmed that loud sounds of blasts can increase the heartbeat of cats.
