Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered the suspension of government-funded petrol and diesel for all provincial ministers’ vehicles in Punjab.
The move is aimed at reducing pressure on the public treasury during the ongoing fuel crisis and rising petroleum prices.
According to sources, the decision is part of extraordinary measures the Punjab government is taking to address economic challenges linked to the ongoing regional war and its impact on fuel supplies.
Under the new directive, provincial ministers will no longer receive government fuel for their official vehicles until the petroleum situation stabilises. The Chief Minister stated that the government must demonstrate austerity and responsibility during difficult economic times.
In addition, petrol and diesel allowances for government officials’ vehicles have been reduced by 50 per cent with immediate effect. A ban has also been imposed on protocol vehicles that usually accompany ministers and senior government officials.
For essential security purposes, only one vehicle will be allowed to accompany provincial ministers and senior government officials.
The government has also decided to implement a ‘Work from Home’ policy in government offices, and only essential staff will be required to come to the office.
Schools, colleges, and universities will remain closed from March 10 to March 31. However, examinations will be conducted according to the existing schedule, and educational institutions will be allowed to hold online classes.
