The UN Human Rights X account has been accused of undermining the credibility of the United Nations by allegedly promoting the Taliban’s agenda, while remaining silent on their actions affecting Pakistan.
The official UN Human Rights account on X, formerly Twitter, is facing criticism from social media users for allegedly overlooking terror attacks targeting Pakistan, even as it reports on violence in Afghanistan. Many users viewed that the UN Human Rights account is showing a double standard.
A recent tweet from the account highlighted a blast in Kabul, reportedly caused by Pakistan. This post has raised questions about whether the UN Human Rights Office is paying equal attention to attacks affecting Pakistan.
In the past month, the Afghan Taliban backed Fitna al Khawarij and Fitna al Hindustan carried out a suicide bombing in Rawalpindi, killing many innocent civilians.
Over the past two and a half years, over 4,000 Pakistanis have reportedly died in attacks orchestrated or funded by Taliban linked groups like Fitna al Khawarij and Fitna al Hindustan. Despite these figures, critics viewed that the UN Human Rights account has largely remained silent on the impact of such violence on Pakistani civilians.
The social media backlash highlights a perception among Pakistani observers that the UN Human Rights account selectively reports on violence in Afghanistan while failing to acknowledge victims in Pakistan.
Analysts note that this perceived imbalance risks undermining the credibility of international human rights messaging, especially in regions where cross-border terrorism has devastating consequences for civilians.
Going further back, this pattern continues all the way to 2024. The account consistently ignores what is happening inside Pakistan. This represents a severe level of hypocrisy: the lives of Pakistanis lost to Afghan Taliban proxies are repeatedly omitted. For context, Pakistan has lost more lives to these groups in the past two and a half years than the lives lost in the recent Israel-Iran conflicts.
The UN Human Rights account appears to completely overlook Pakistani victims while seeming to advance a narrative favourable to the Taliban. This is, in effect, a complete mockery of the United Nations’ mandate.
