YouTube expands Shorts with AI “Reimagine” tool

YouTube Shorts Reimagine

YouTube is about to have an expanded Shorts ecosystem, by introducing a new feature. The feature is an AI-powered Remix called “Reimagine” that will help creators have more control over how their video content is transformed.

The update, announced March 18, includes a tool to let users be creative with the ability to change scenes in existing Shorts with generative video technology.

At its core Reimagine helps its users pick one frame (per any Short) and then change the frame using AI.

The feature is powered by Veo, which is an advanced video generation model built by Google. In order to access it, while the user watches a Short, they can use the Remix menu and select the “Reimagine” option.

From there, they can choose a frame and determine how they want to change the frame.

The process is supposed to be intuitive. Gemini pairs the presentation with some suggestions for prompts based on the frame selected so that users can get started quickly.

However, it is not limited to these suggestions and creators can enter their own custom instructions to instruct the AI.

One of the key highlights for Reimagine is the combination of personal media into it. Users can upload up to two reference images which enables them to insert themselves or other things into the scene.

For example, a person might put their own photo in a generated clip, making it look as though he or she is skydiving or driving a race car.

The AI then generates an 8 second video from these inputs.

Each reimagined Short will also have a link back to the original video giving credit to the original video.

This tool builds on previous features powered by Artificial Intelligence such as Shorts templates or Photos to Video.

While no precise release date has been confirmed, YouTube has said that Reimagine will be coming out soon as part of its push to increase creative tools more broadly, while maintaining a focus on real, user-driven content instead of purely-automated content.
