Election commission disqualifies PTI leader Murad Saeed

The Election Commission has disqualified the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) leader, Murad Saeed, according to an official notification issued on Thursday.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has de notified Senator Murad Saeed after he was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment by the Special Anti Terrorism Court No.1, Rawalpindi.

This has been done in connection with FIR No. 708/23 registered at the RA Bazar police station.

In a notification issued on March 25, 2026, the ECP stated that, following the court’s order dated March 7, 2026, and the Commission’s subsequent decision, Murad Saeed stands disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution.

He had earlier been notified as a returned candidate on a general Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in July 2025. As a result, his Senate seat has been declared vacant as well.

Islamabad ATC bars arrest of PTI leaders

Previously, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in the federal capital had ordered that leaders of PTI not be arrested until May 21.

ATC Islamabad Judge Abu al Hasanat Muhammad Zulqarnain heard the cases registered against the leaders of PTI in connection with the November 26 protest, the Sangjani rally and the demonstrations held outside the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

In the process of the hearing, PTI leaders, including Umair Niazi, Raoof Hasan and Azam Swati, along with other accused, appeared before the court.

The court extended over 230 pre arrest bails granted to PTI leaders and ordered authorities not to arrest them till May 21.

May 9 case: PTI leaders sentenced to 10 years

Earlier, PTI leaders were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment in the May 9 GOR Gate attack case. Shah Mehmood Qureshi had been acquitted in the same case.

ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill announced the decision at Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The court sentenced Dr Yasmin Rashid, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, and Ijaz Chaudhry to ten years in prison.

The court handed down a ten year prison term to Mehmoodur Rasheed as well. However, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was acquitted in the case.
