iPhone 18 Pro leaks point to smaller Dynamic Island, refined design

iPhone 18 Pro Max

Fresh leaks around the next Apple iPhone 18 Pro suggest the device could bring subtle but noticeable changes, led by a slimmer version of Apple’s Dynamic Island.

Images of what is claimed to be a screen protector for the upcoming model have surfaced online, hinting at a narrower, pill-shaped cut-out at the top of the display. The cut-out, which houses the TrueDepth camera and Face ID system, is reportedly smaller than the one seen on the Apple iPhone 17 Pro. According to details shared on Chinese social platform Weibo, the new cut-out could measure around 13.49mm, compared with roughly 20.76mm on the current model.

Smaller cut-out, same overall look

Despite this change, the overall design is expected to remain familiar. Early reports indicate that display bezels will stay largely unchanged, pointing to a design that builds on the current generation rather than introducing a major visual overhaul.

The reduced size of the Dynamic Island is believed to be made possible by shifting some Face ID components beneath the display. In particular, Apple may move parts such as the flood illuminator under the screen, freeing up space and allowing for a cleaner look.

There are also suggestions that the smaller cut-out will not be limited to the Pro models, with the entire iPhone 18 line tipped to adopt the updated design.

Performance upgrades and camera changes

Beyond design tweaks, the Apple Inc. flagship is expected to focus heavily on performance improvements. The device is rumoured to feature a new A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, which could bring gains in both speed and efficiency.

Another key change could be Apple’s move towards its own in-house modem, with the C2 chip expected to replace Qualcomm components across the lineup. This shift may give Apple greater control over connectivity and power use.

Camera upgrades are also being discussed. The Pro Max variant could introduce a variable aperture system for the rear camera, allowing better control over light and depth. Improvements to sensors and front-facing cameras are also being mentioned, though details remain limited.

Shift in launch strategy

One of the biggest reported changes is not in hardware, but timing. Apple is expected to adjust its usual release cycle, launching only the Pro models in September 2026. The standard versions of the iPhone 18 could arrive later, likely in spring 2027.

This staggered rollout would mark a notable shift for the company, which has traditionally unveiled all main models together in September. The move could help Apple keep attention on its premium devices during the key holiday period.

Alongside the Pro models, Apple is also said to be preparing a foldable iPhone, signalling a broader push into high-end and experimental designs.

A refinement-focused upgrade

Overall, early indications suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will not be a dramatic redesign, but rather a careful refinement of an already established look. A smaller Dynamic Island, improved internals, and selective camera upgrades appear to be at the centre of the changes.

While much of the information remains based on leaks and speculation, the device is still shaping up to be an important release for Apple as it continues to evolve its flagship lineup.
