PIA ends concessions for students, seniors as fuel prices surge

PIA ends discounts for students, senior citizens

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has decided to withdraw discounts/concessions for multiple passenger categories including students due to rising jet fuel costs.

Sources say Pakistan International Airlines has ended concessions previously offered to students, senior citizens, journalists, retired military personnel and Airport Security Force staff.

A PIA spokesperson confirmed that all discounts have been suspended for now. The decision will remain in place until fuel prices return to normal levels.

The spokesperson said high jet fuel prices have put significant financial pressure on the airline’s operations.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has announced a 50 percent reduction in fares.

Airfares rise

Airfares in Pakistan have risen further as jet fuel prices surge and operational costs climb amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict involving Iran.

Several airlines have increased ticket prices by adding extra security charges, passing the burden of higher fuel costs to passengers. Aviation sources say fuel expenses have nearly doubled.

Fares on major domestic routes, including Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore, have seen sharp increases. One-way tickets from Karachi to Islamabad and Lahore are now reaching up to Rs40,000.

Officials also point to jet fuel shortages and limited oil reserves as key factors driving the continued rise in ticket prices.
