Meta widens global crackdown on teen content

Meta teen content

Instagram’s teen content restrictions will be globally expanded for the purpose of limiting exposure to sensitive material.

This move comes after the parent company Meta has repeatedly faced public and legal pressures over teen safety.

It has been announced by Instagram that it will now apply its movie-inspired content guidelines for teen accounts on a global scale.

The restrictions were initially introduced in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States last October.

It was revealed by the company on Thursday that the new policy was being expanded worldwide.

This announcement comes shortly after the parent company Meta was held accountable in New Mexican and Los Angeles courts last month. This was due to allegations of harm to teen users.

The company is trying to address the increasing scrutiny over its impact on young audiences by rolling out the movie-inspired content guidelines globally.

The updated policy is going to limit teens’ exposure to sexual nudity, extreme violence and graphic drug use.

The posts on Instagram which will be containing risking stunts, strong language or marijuana or drug related imagery will also be hidden and not recommended to teenagers through algorithms.

A new feature will also be introduced called the Limited Content setting. It will be designed to apply stricter filters.

The Limited Content setting will prevent teens from leaving, viewing or receiving comments on certain posts. This furthers tighten control over interactions on the platform.

System Limitations are acknowledged by the Country

Instagram acknowledged that their system is not perfect however they are trying their best to reduce harmful content.

The company said, “Just like you might see some suggestive content or hear some strong language in a movie rated for ages 13+, teens may occasionally see something like that on Instagram.”
