Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar to launch robotic surgery soon

Robotic surgery has been introduced for the first time at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.

The development emerged following a one-day live workshop held at the oldest hospital in the province, during which a robotic surgery was conducted by Prof Matin Sheriff, the director of Robotic Surgery at the West Kent Urology Cancer Centre, Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent, UK, alongside Prof Nadeem Bin Nusrat from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI&RC) in Lahore.

Prof Martin stated that robotic surgery is becoming increasingly common worldwide.

It is not only common in developed nations but is also being implemented in the Punjab and Sindh provinces, with the aim of training doctors and support staff to enhance patient care in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he noted.

He explained that Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (Ramis) is a sophisticated surgical method that enables surgeons to manipulate robotic arms fitted with specialised instruments and a high-definition 3D camera from a console.

This technique allows for the execution of complex surgeries through small incisions, offering greater precision, flexibility, and control compared to traditional open surgery.

The workshop included practical training sessions and scholarly discussions in which trainers tested their knowledge of robotic urological techniques.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Azra Ghani, Dr. Muhammad Asif, and Dr. Khalid Farooq, whose contributions fostered a highly productive and engaging learning atmosphere for the attendees.

The workshop in Peshawar also attracted a significant number of consultants, trainees, and medical professionals, providing them with invaluable insights into the latest developments in robotic surgery.

Key highlights of the event included live demonstrations, interactive sessions, and case-based discussions.
