The federal government has taken a major step by abolishing the facility of free electricity units for employees of the power sector, a move long demanded by the public. The decision means no electricity units for power sector employees, marking a significant shift in policy.
According to details, the government has permanently ended the provision of free electricity units, ensuring no electricity units for power sector employees going forward. This decision is being seen as part of broader reforms aimed at reducing the financial burden on the national exchequer.

Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, confirmed that the era of free electricity for employees has now come to an end. He emphasised that there will be no electricity units for power sector employees, calling it a historic and bold decision by the current government.
Welcoming the court’s ruling in this regard, the minister described it as a positive development and said that under the leadership of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, this is the first government to implement no electricity units for power sector employees despite longstanding resistance.
Fulfilling public demand is the government’s priority
He further stated that ending free units had been one of the oldest demands of the public, and fulfilling it was among the government’s top priorities. The implementation of no electricity units for power sector employees reflects the government’s commitment to fairness and accountability.
Leghari added that the government feels honoured to have fulfilled this public demand, reiterating that no electricity units for power sector employees will help ease pressure on consumers and improve transparency.
He also pledged that the government will continue to take necessary steps for economic recovery, stressing that no electricity units for power sector employees is just one of many reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s financial system.
