The government of Punjab has proposed an interest-free e-bike and e-taxi scheme in the upcoming budget for the fiscal year 2026-27.

The Punjab government is planning to introduce an interest-free scheme offering 50,000 electric bikes and 5,000 electric taxis under its upcoming budget.

The officials said that the Punjab government is making an effort to promote affordable transport and create employment opportunities.

The proposal, which has been approved for inclusion in the provincial budget for the next financial year, is primarily aimed at students and unemployed young people.

Under the scheme, eligible applicants would be able to obtain electric vehicles through interest-free financing and repay the cost through installments.

Officials said that the programme is intended to reduce transport expenses while encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles.

According to the proposal, 50,000 electric bikes and 5,000 electric taxis will be made available.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said that the government is also considering measures to reduce registration-related costs for successful applicants, although final details are yet to be announced.

The initiative comes as Pakistan seeks to encourage electric mobility and reduce dependence on conventional fuels.

Rising fuel prices have increased transport costs for households, making electric vehicles a potentially attractive alternative for daily commuters and small businesses.

Officials said that those who will buy an e-taxi could create self-employment opportunities, as this scheme will surely enable young people to enter the transport sector without the burden of interest-based vehicle financing.

According to the media reports, the success of the scheme will depend on several factors, including the affordability of installments, battery performance, charging infrastructure and after-sales support.

The proposal is being considered alongside a review of Punjab’s free public transport programme.

The transport minister added that more than 70 million passenger journeys have been made using the service over the past two months.

Officials are assessing whether the facility should continue in its current form, be modified or be phased out, depending on fuel prices and budgetary considerations.

A briefing presented to the chief minister suggested that the programme could be withdrawn if petrol prices fall to Rs300 per litre.

Key details of the electric vehicle scheme, including eligibility requirements, application procedures, vehicle models and repayment schedules, are expected to be announced during the provincial budget presentation.

If approved, the programme would represent one of Punjab’s largest efforts to expand access to electric transport and support young people seeking affordable mobility and employment opportunities.
