Electricity prices may increase by Rs0.26 per unit under March fuel adjustment

Electricity prices could rise by Rs0.26 per unit as the Central Power Purchasing Agency has lodged a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority.

This request has been made under the fuel cost adjustment for March. NEPRA is scheduled to review the petition over electricity prices on April 28.

As reported by the Central Power Purchasing Agency, 23 percent of the electricity generated in March came from hydel sources, while nuclear power accounted for 22 percent.

Nearly 30 percent of the electricity was produced using both local and imported coal, 10 percent from gas, and 5 percent from RLNG.

New power tariff system for industries

Earlier, the government prepared to introduce a new tariff system aimed at industrial consumers, as part of efforts to improve electricity use and provide greater flexibility to businesses.

According to the Power Division, a new optional multi-tariff Time of Use (ToU) system was placed under consideration.

The proposal was designed to help industries manage their electricity consumption more efficiently while aligning power prices more closely with actual costs.

IMF urges proposed changes to tariffs for low income households

In February, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that it was in talks with Pakistani authorities over proposed changes to electricity tariffs, while stressing that the cost should not fall on middle and lower income households.

In a statement to Reuters, the Fund said the discussions were focused on whether the planned revisions match Pakistan’s commitments under its loan programme and how they may affect the wider economy.

This also involved the possible impact on inflation, which remains a major concern for both policymakers and the public.
