LAHORE: As the smog situation intensifies in Lahore, the provincial government is closely monitoring the situation and there is a chance that school holidays would be announced.
Smog has increased to dangerous levels in several cities of Punjab, including Lahore. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert, saying that the air may become more polluted in the coming days due to dry weather.
Today, Lahore was once again declared the most polluted city in the world, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 362, which is a very dangerous level for health.
Last year, the Punjab government had closed all educational institutions for a week from November 3, which was later extended for another week. This year too, the possibility of early school holidays is being considered.
According to sources, if the intensity of smog increases further, primary level schools may be temporarily closed. However, the Education Department and the Punjab government have not taken any final decision yet.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of further deterioration of air quality in the cities of eastern Punjab. Experts have warned that polluted air can increase cases of respiratory diseases, colds, coughs and eye irritation.
Doctors say that children, the elderly and respiratory patients are most affected during this season, so citizens should avoid unnecessary outings and use masks.
