Veteran American journalist and foreign affairs analyst Fareed Zakaria has stated that US President Donald Trump’s interest in Prime Minister Narendra Modi has waned, and that the president currently appears to have stronger relations with Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Fareed Zakaria said that US President Donald Trump no longer appears to be as interested in Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he once was, and that the focus of his attention has now shifted to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
Speaking to the Indian TV channel News18, Zakaria said that Trump’s reference to Modi as a “murderer” was not meant as a compliment but was instead a sarcastic and ambiguous remark, noting that it is unusual for an elected leader to use such language.
Fareed Zakaria said, “Trump is a very transparent human being. What you see now between Trump and Modi is that he has lost his fascination with Modi. Trump’s remark calling Modi a ‘killer’ is an unusual kind of compliment. Some spark has gone out of their relationship.
He added that President Trump is very relationship-oriented and that he currently has such a relationship with Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
He said that US President Donald Trump places great importance on personal relationships and prefers to apply the same approach in his foreign policy. According to him, at present, the focus of Trump’s close personal engagement is not with Modi but with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
He added that personal relationships play a significant role in Trump’s diplomatic priorities, which is why his relationships with world leaders can change over time.
