Pakistan ‘to ban’ dual citizenship for govt employees

The Establishment Division has sent a draft amendment to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) about the rules on dual citizenship for government employees, according to the reports on Tuesday.

According to reports shared by a private news channel, the proposal suggests a complete ban on dual citizenship for foreign service officers and staff.

In addition to this, other government employees will need official permission before getting citizenship in another country.

The draft was prepared after recommendations from the Secretaries’ Committee. It suggests changes to service rules related to the dual nationality of government workers.

The draft suggests a full ban on dual citizenship for diplomats. Foreign service officers and staff will not be allowed to hold citizenship of another country, as per the suggestions in the draft.

Ambassadors who already have dual citizenship will have to give up their second nationality, according to it.

Additionally, the government employees will have to declare if they or their family members hold dual citizenship. This must be done within three months according to the proposed rules.

The purpose is to officially record the dual nationality status of employees and of their families as well.

Employees who already have dual citizenship may keep it. However, new employees will need permission from the government before getting foreign citizenship.

Other officers, other than those who are in the foreign service staff, will also need approval before taking dual citizenship.

For retired diplomats

Retired diplomats who already have dual citizenship will be allowed to keep it. There is an exception for them.

The proposed rules mainly apply to serving diplomats, foreign service officers, and ambassadors. The draft is now under review by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Pakistanis seeking dual German citizenship

Pakistan has completed all legal requirements to finalise a dual nationality arrangement with Germany.

This means Germany will now allow Pakistani origin residents in the country to keep their Pakistani citizenship while also getting a German nationality.

In a public notice, the Pakistan Embassy in Germany has confirmed that it has been added to the list of countries with which Pakistan allows dual nationality.
